The University of Cincinnati Bearcats will do battle with the Virginia Tech Hokies, the champion of the Atlantic Coast Conference on January 1st. This will be a crucial game for both teams. A win for the Hokies would mean an end to the ACC drought with regards to the Bowl Championship Series.

The weather conditions can make or break the game. The players have to be comfortable and are used with the kind of weather in the place where they play the game. The Bearcats might have to fight against a different opponent, the heat, in order to win the game.

In preparation for the Orange Bowl games on January where the temperature is much higher University of Cincinnati’s football team, the Bearcats, would have wanted to practice in a place very similar to that in Miami. Unfortunately, that was not possible when they had to do it at the Nippert Stadium in the midst of a very cold afternoon.

The practice venue though will be transferred to

Copyright © 2009 Ed Bagley

It’s over for Southern California. Coach Pete Carroll will be dining with some lesser light Hollywood celebrities in the near future.

Gone are the USC streaks of 7 straight BCS bowls, 7 straight 11-win seasons, and 7 straight top-4 AP poll finishes. Gone also is USC’s 7-year stranglehold on the Pac-10 Conference title.

After 60 excruciating minutes of watching Stanford’s Toby Gerhart—The Cardinal Battering Ram—run all over USC’s home field for 178 yards and 3 touchdowns, Pete Carroll and his Trojans were handed their second major trouncing in two weeks. There was no stopping Gerhart as 25th-ranked Stanford (7-3) did a number on the 11th-ranked and soon dropping USC (7-3) Trojans, 55-21. Adding insult to injury, it was USC’s 2009 homecoming game.

Just two weeks ago, USC was upset at Oregon 47-20. Saturday’s loss to Stanford was the Trojans’ worst since a 51-0 drubbing at home against Notre Dame in 1966, 43 years

I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was on my feet, leaning heavily to one side, trying to urge Gordon Hayward’s half-court heave into the hoop with every ounce of body language I had in me. I let out an audible “Oh!” as the shot nearly banked in, then slumped into my couch as if I’d been shot in the gut. It was a horrible feeling, brought on by that fleeting moment in which I thought Hayward’s shot was destined to cement Butler’s place in the history of collegiate basketball. I had not expected to be so affected by the outcome of this game.

I’d come into the national title game between Duke and Butler thinking I’d root for the Bulldogs a little, as they were big underdogs, but I was largely indifferent concerning the outcome since my bracket had been decimated in the early rounds of the tournament. But as the second half wore on, I found myself vehemently rooting for the Bulldogs as if Butler were my alma mater. I gradually became aware

One great thing about the NBA and commissioner David Stern is that they fix mistakes with their game. Case in point – in 2003 the NBA switched the first round of the playoffs from a best-of-five game series to a best-of-seven to help ensure that the better team advances. That’s why it’s mind boggling to wonder why they won’t change the playoff format to account for debacles like this season.

If a non-sports fan took a quick check at the 2006 Western Conference Standings and then the Playoff bracket, they would scratch their heads in disbelief. The Dallas Mavericks had the second best record in the conference at 60-22, three games behind conference leading San Antonio. The Denver Nuggets were 44-38, 19 games behind San Antonio. Yet, come playoff time the Nuggets were the #3 seed while the Mavericks were the #4 seed. All because Dallas happens to play in the same division as San Antonio and the top three seeds HAVE TO be division winners. So now Dallas and

March Madness is Around the Corner

Only one week before the Big Dance officially gets under way, all the major conferences are having action. There are several teams from 38 Conferences willing to play hard to move from district to regional tournaments on the road to reach the Final Four on April 2.

Although, there are millions of sports fans who look forward to whip themselves into the frenzy of games. For most of these basketball enthusiast this month means a basketball show full of high talent, tired defenses and good shooters a long with big doses of fun.

In March everyone can be a Bracketologists, most people like to go with the popular one, and this gives UCLA and Kentucky privileged positions in view of the fact that no one has won more national titles than those two teams.

Since a basketball team’s success is the real catalyst for joining National Championship, it is recommendable to worry about the performance instead of popularity.

We are yet to see some powerful teams from Big 12 North because so far it seems like forever since the teams of the South have dominated the Big 12. There is no hope of that changing anytime soon however because the gap in the potential of the two division is only increasing if anything. So just like all the recent years, the great teams for the Big 12 are all part of Big 12 South.

With teams like Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech ? it seems like the south is the place to be in college football this year. It is definitely the best division there is right now.

That also means that the winner of the South title is going to win the Big 12 championship title without a doubt. What happens in South is what we actually have to see, as usual. So let’s take a look at the power packed south teams that have been placed on the top 3 list for the Big 12.

Texas Longhorns ? They are amongst the favorite picks for many an expert and
